Feelings of loneliness affect people of all ages and backgrounds. Loneliness can be caused by external circumstances - lack of mobility, mental or physical ill health, bereavement, relationship break up, redundancy and retirement. Sometimes, however, we may feel lonely with no obvious external cause. To get out of the house or flat, to enjoy some entertainment in a carefully organized setting and to have someone to talk to are all helpful ways of dealing with feelings of isolation and loneliness.
The Archway Foundation (known simply as Archway) was established in Oxford in 1982 by Paul Hawgood to help serve those hurt by loneliness. We are aware of needs elsewhere and so we are developing the service in Abingdon. Archway helps relieve some of the distress caused by loneliness. It does this through a variety of supportive activities and by recruiting an essential team of volunteers (drivers and befrienders are urgently needed). Founded on Christian values, Archway is committed to serving adults hurt by loneliness irrespective of sexual orientation, religion, culture or background. If you wish to make use of the service or attend one of the Archway activities we will first meet with you to listen and help you to explore ways in which you could find the appropriate level of support that you need. What you share will be kept in confidence.

On Saturday 2nd July, Archway Friends enjoyed a trip to a local farm with charity 'Let Nature Feed Your Senses'. It was an enjoyable day in the Cotswolds with the opportunity to collect eggs in the morning, sort lambs for market, groom a horse, learn felt making and go for a country walk in the idyllic surroundings. Many Archway Friends do not have the opportunity to get out and about or meet with others so this provided an enriching and informative experience. It was particularly special as MP Tony Baldry (new patron of Archway) joined us for the day. Photo's can be seen on the Facebook page.
Friends enjoyed a trip to the open air theatre in the Bodleian Quad to see Shakespear's "As You Like It". Archway volunteer Jo Lamb arranged the evening to see her actor son (Ben Lamb) perform four roles in the production by the Globe Theatre. It was a lovely sunny day and Friends found the performance inspirational for their own drama group (The Archway Players) who have performed at the Monday social evening. Jo Lamb says "we expect to see great things from the Archway players soon!"
Archway Director and Volunteers got their hands dirty washing cars to raise funds for Archway. Dr Steve Harris (Archway volunteer) nominated Archway to Infineum Smile's charity of the year and initiated the car washing event. As a result the owners of the newly cleaned cars donated £100 which was matched by Infineum Smile raising a total of £200 for Archway.
